The importance of life drawing

Before persuading an art style, I think artists should really practice drawing from life first. I’ve been going at it for a few years, on and off, and I still feel I haven’t quite got it down. But then, art is a process and you’ll never stop learning. Best have fun while we’re at it!

“Draw yourself as your favourite artist / muse” was this week’s #creativebeing challenge on Twitter. An easy choice. To me, Frida Kahlo is an icon with a timeless look and a powerful, honest artistic vision. It felt almost wrong to change her features and steer away from her signature painting style. But it was a fun experiment!

Painting of artist Frida Kahlo

“I don’t paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality” – Frida Kahlo

Today was surreal. An August afternoon, one moment beaming with bright sunlight, the next thunderstorms and lightning. While shoppers were hiding in the bus shelter opposite my flat and the rain came pouring down my windows, I was sat snugly at my desk drawing Frida. The perfect inspiration for a perfect Sunday afternoon in.

Done in Indian ink and watercolour.
